In celebration of Youth Month this June, I’m sharing some of my favourite childhood memories with you.
In collaboration with Travelstart, weekly winners will win flight vouchers worth R1000, while the grand prizes include a Ryze Tello Minidrone and trip for 2 to Zanzibar worth R25,000.
Some of my best childhood memories are:
Spending time with my cousins and grandparents
My cousins were my first friends and I loved spending time with them. We played at home, always outside. We played make believe and hide and seek. Our imaginations lead the way. We dressed up and performed in little concerts for our parents and grandparents. Whether it was a play date with my cousins who lived close by or a Christmas holiday with those who were a bit further away, we made memories that I treasure for a lifetime. A sleepover at my grandparents was always a huge highlight with Milo before bedtime and lots of ice cream spoils.
Going to the Beach
The simple things were so much fun. We used to build sand castles and dig holes in the sand. We had sand in our hair and we were sticky from eating ice lollies. I remember the bittersweet endings to those days. We never wanted to leave the beach but my loving mom always gave me a warm bath and a crispy clean set of pyjamas. It was bliss.

Playing Sports with my brother
I played Bakers mini-cricket. My brother and I were always playing outside and we spent lots of time at the Sports Club.
Playing with my Baby Sister
I loved babysitting my little sister, dressing her up and doing her hair.
Camping with my Dad
My dad and I travelled through Botswana on our own. We camped in the Central Kalahari and saw some of the best wildlife sightings I have ever seen. We mastered some serious 4×4 territory to go and see Baines Baobabs. It was an unforgettable experience to witness the majestic trees and the subject of the artist’s painting in real life.
This month we are celebrating the Youth. I’m taking part in #BeAKidAgain

The best time of year to visit Zanzibar is from June to October when it is cool and dry. This is a perfect destination for a trip for two to catch up on some well-deserved me-time, or to nurture your partnership, marriage or parenting team.
Happy parents mean happy children.
When your child is searching for you in an auditorium full of people he is not searching for a perfect parent, he is just searching for his parent. Let’s not lose ourselves.
